Bay of Bengal system likely to develop into cyclone by October 26, Met Department warns

Executive Intelligence Dispatch
The low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal in the vicinity of the North Andaman Islands is likely to develop into a depression by today (October 24), while remaining in the same general area, according to the Department of Meteorology. The Department stated that the system is expected to move west-northwestwards and intensify further, with a very high probability of developing into a deep depression by tomorrow (October 25).There is also a very high likelihood that the system will intensify into a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 26, the Department added.Although the system is not expected to have a direct impact on Sri Lanka, an increase in rainfall is anticipated over the southwestern parts of the island during the next few days, as wind flows drawn towards the system move across the country.Accordingly, showers or thundershowers may occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Northern and North Western Provinces. In other parts of the island, showers or thundershowers may occur after 1.00 p.m. Some areas could experience fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 millimetres. The Department of Meteorology further stated that misty conditions may occur at some locations in the Central and Uva Provinces during the early morning hours.
