The Scoop & Verified Narrative

A fishing boat from Kudawella and its four crew members, who went missing after losing communication while at sea due to Cyclone Arnab, have been found safe. The Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources said the boat was located in deep waters, around 200 nautical miles off the coast of Pothuvil. The boat left the Kudawella Fisheries Harbour on October 21 for a four-day fishing trip. The four fishermen on board were identified as W. P. Priyantha, P. B. Nimalsiri, L. Y. Naushka and K. H. Savindu, who is also the owner of the boat.Following strong winds and rough sea conditions caused by Cyclone Arnab, all communication links between the boat and the shore were reportedly lost. After receiving information about the incident, the Fisheries Department’s Search and Rescue Coordination Centre launched a special search operation with the support of the Sri Lanka Navy, Coast Guard and other fishing vessels operating in the area. The joint operation led to the safe discovery of the missing boat and its four crew members. The Ministry said arrangements were underway to bring them safely back to shore. All four fishermen are reported to be in good health. Arrangements have also been made to provide them with basic medical examinations and first aid.The Ministry further urged all fishermen heading out to sea to closely follow weather warnings issued by the Department of Meteorology and the Fisheries Department. They were also advised to ensure that their communication equipment is in proper working order before setting out to sea.
