A satyagraha launched by a group of Maha Sangha at Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo, demanding the release of Venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera, General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena, who is serving a prison sentence, entered its ninth day today (24).Meanwhile, Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama ruled yesterday that an order directing the monks participating in the satyagraha at Viharamahadevi Park to leave the premises could not be changed. The Magistrate made the ruling after considering a motion filed by the monks seeking to have the order revoked. However, the Magistrate also rejected a motion filed by the Attorney General seeking arrest warrants against those who remained in the area despite the court order being read out to them.In a separate development, Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena yesterday directed that, if the Buddhist monks named as respondents in connection with a recent protest near the Presidential Secretariat demanding Gnanasara Thera’s release had not taken part in the procession, the matter should be brought to the attention of a higher court and appropriate action taken. The directive followed a submission by a lawyer representing several monks. The lawyer informed the court that some of the monks had not participated in the procession, but their names had been incorrectly included by Fort Police.Meanwhile, the United National Party (UNP) has alleged that the decision to remove the names of monks from the court order issued against those who remained near the Presidential Secretariat amounted to a deliberate and serious wrongdoing. In a statement, the party said some of the monks whose names appeared in the original court order had not been involved in the incident. The statement further claimed that initially including their names and subsequently removing them amounted to a deliberate attempt to mislead the court. It also alleged that the government continually seeks to attack Buddhism and the Buddhist clergy.Meanwhile, Venerable Ulapane Sumangala Thera, who visited the satyagraha site yesterday, said the protest would continue uninterrupted until Gnanasara Thera is released, regardless of any obstacles.
