The Secretary to the President has instructed that a special operational team be established under the leadership of the Colombo Municipal Council, bringing together the three armed forces, the Police and relevant institutions to respond to such emergencies efficiently and promptly.The meeting was held today(7) afternoon at the Presidential Secretariat under the leadership of Presidential Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake to examine the causes of sudden flooding in Colombo and identify immediate solutions.The Presidential Media Division said discussions were also held on preparing and implementing short-, medium- and long-term plans to upgrade the drainage system as required.President’s secretary Instructs formation of special task force under Colombo municipal council to tackle flooding and emergenciesIt was revealed that the improper disposal of garbage had blocked several drainage systems and canals, obstructing the flow of water.Attention was therefore drawn to the urgent cleaning of blocked drains and waterways, as well as taking legal action against those responsible for improper waste disposal.The meeting also identified unauthorised constructions within the Colombo Municipal Council limits as another factor obstructing certain drainage systems and waterways.Discussions focused on the need to prepare and promptly implement plans to remove these unauthorised structures and relocate the affected people to suitable alternative locations.The importance of properly disposing of garbage and keeping waterways clean was also discussed, along with the need to implement a public awareness programme on these matters.
